GEO

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)

Definition

GEO is what you do to get ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews to actually name your brand when someone asks a question you could answer. Not ranking a link. Being the thing the AI quotes.

Traditional SEO chases a click. GEO chases a mention inside someone else’s answer, which means the scoring is different too. A page can sit at #1 in Google and still get cited zero times by ChatGPT, because Google’s ranking signals and an LLM’s “who do I trust enough to quote” signals barely overlap. What actually moves the needle: content that reads like a clean, standalone answer rather than a slow build-up to one, clear entities so the model knows who’s talking, and structured data that removes any guesswork about what a page is. Nobody’s cracked a perfect formula for this yet. It’s closer to reverse-engineering a black box than following a checklist.
